2003-04-17 - 9:04 p.m. What a wonderful rain we got this evening. We were starting to get pretty dry. The late corn I planted a couple of days ago really needed this rain. We got about 7 tenths of an inch. If the weather stays warm that seed should start to swell in a few days and be up in a week. You know your talking to a farmer if they always express rain amounts in tenths. If you ask most folks how much rain they got they'll say something like, "oh about an inch I guess" but a farmer will be able to tell you how many tenths he got 10 minutes after the rain ends. I wonder how funny it would look if you could see all the farmers in an area at one time right after a well needed rain ended. With one accord you'd see them dutifully trot out to the raingauge, some even in their underwear if it's night, and almost religiously check the ammount, pouring out the precious water and carefully replacing the trusted friend to its honored spot near the backdoor. I even have 2 raingauges though I don't know why. They always record about the same amount but I always feel better trusting the one that records the extra tenth if were in a drought and I like the one that is lower when were in a wet spell. I know it dosen't actually change the amount it rained but it makes me feel better.
