Got a good rest today. A sunday rest sure does get me ready for the week ahead. The strawberries are just beginning to ripen and I found a couple of ripe ones this evening. Boy do they taste good!! We only grow strawberries for ourselves so don't email asking when you can come pick them. I thought about growing some for sale but they're to fickle for me. They bloom so early here that a late frost does a lot of damage. You have to install a watering system to apply water for freeze protection. If the frost doesn't get them disease might. If it's wet when they're ripening all sorts of rots set in. Too many "ifs" for me.

So we just grow some for us. Kinda selfish I guess but I don't feel very bad about it. If it frosts I throw some hay over the patch and hope for the best. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I like the fact I don't spray them. Sure I generally lose some to disease, sometimes a lot, but if we get a good crop Sue puts up enough to cover a bad year. It's nice to just bend down, pick one off, and pop it in your mouth without worrying what spray is on it. They're the first fruit of the year for us and one of the best.
