Woke up to sunshine today. What a beautiful sight. After a week or more of clouds and rain it is a welcome thing to see. We started digging potatoes the last couple of days and they are turning out really well. With all the rain this year we haven't had to water yet. It sure is a far cry from last year. It was so dry we started watering in early spring and watered most all the summer on and off. We pulled hoses around so much our arms got a foot longer. This year the irrigation pump is silent and I need to go down and crank it up just to keep it in working shape. The trees in the woods really needed a year like this. After 5 years of drought we lost a lot of trees. All winter I cut up firewood and already have enough for next year and there are still dead trees I didn't get to. There will probably still be more trees dying for a few years to come even if we get normal rainfall.

I told Sue that the Old Timers got nothing on us now. You know what I mean. You say something about how hot or cold or wet or dry it is and if there is an Old Timer around they'll chime right in with something like " Why you ain't seen nothing, I remember back," and then will come the slightly exaggerated story that is supposed to make you wish you never opened your mouth. Well since Sue and I have been married we have lived through the hottest summer, coldest winter, wettest year and driest year on record in Georgia. Unless someone is over 150 years old I've got them. Boy just wait till I get old and some young whippersnapper begins to complain. "Why you ain't seen nothing." Have a great Memorial Day!
