2003-10-23 - 8:08 a.m. We have a gravel drive that is about 500 feet long that I have to maintain. Gravel roads are funny things. Over the last 15 years that we have lived here I have put down a total of about 100 tons of gravel on the drive. Every few years I get another load delivered and add a new layer of gravel. In a couple of years it's all been squished into the ground by the trucks and tractors going over it and it's time for a new layer. One day I'm going to try and dig down and see just how deep the gravel goes down into the ground. It's got to go somewhere and by this time it must be a foot deep of packed gravel. I wonder if it would ever get to the point where it would have so much gravel packed into the ground you wouldn't have to add any more. I sort of doubt I'll ever see that day and I don't know of anyone with a gravel road that's well used that never has to add gravel sometime. Maybe there are little gravel critters that come out at night and steal the gravel a little at a time. Well, either way I've got another truck of gravel this year to put out and watch melt away.
