Each year I plant a winter cover crop on the garden. This protects the ground from being packed by winter rains and supplys organic matter when I till it into the ground in the spring. I've used clover, vetch, rye, oats, wheat, and greens to name a few. This year I'm using rye on most of the garden broken up by strips of mustard. I always have to plant some mustard. My wife and In-laws love them, so I supply the community with greens each year. The mustard greens are tall enough now to start picking and Liz picked some for my mother in law and Sue cooked some.

Now there are not too many things I won't eat but mustard greens are definitly in the group. It's all I can do to just stay in the house while Sue cooks them. Greens are not something you can cook in secret. When your cooking greens all your neighbors will know what's for supper and will, in my opinion, wisely turn down an offer to eat with you that night. We don't sell greens but sometimes people will see the greens growing in the garden and stop at the house. Usually it will be the wife who will ask if those greens are for sale and beg to buy some. I really feel sorry for the husband. If he dosen't love greens like his wife he sure is in for a stinky day.

Sue tells me I ought to learn to like them. She'll tell me how they're full of vitamins and minerals. Well so is dirt, and I just assume eat that as greens. One day I may break down and start eating them, like maybe when all my tase buds ae gone, but for right now it's a pretty safe bet you won't see any in my mouth. I believe I'll just stick to growing them for now.
