2004-06-06 - 8:56 p.m. Sometimes I get to thinking I need a new job. Farming is a demanding career. The work is dirty and the hours are long. There are lots of risks and the pay is low. I figured up my hourly earnings one time and came to the conclusion I would make more per hour at McDonalds. Then I see the other side. Some mornings traffic on the road that goes by the farm is backed up to the light a mile away. Some people spend an hour each morning driving to work and another hour in the evening getting home. Everything is a rush to them and they never really relax. When I go to work in the morning I step out my back door and I'm there. At the end of a long day I'm usually within sight of that same door and the welcome smell of supper is the only time clock. I get to spend time with my family, and my children actually know in detail what I do for a living because they are often at my side helping. Most kids know the name of the job their Dads do but little else about it and that's sad. So, weighing the good against the bad I once again come to the conclusion I've got a good deal here and need to quit complaining and be more thankful. I need to do this every now and then, take account, and I always come up with the same figures.
