2006-06-21 - 11:14 p.m. Droughts are harsh and this one has been particuarly severe. One of the worst things about a drought is the smell. In the fall when leaves and plants begin to turn brown there is a crisp clean smell to the air but not so with a summer drought. As the green turns to brown the smell is sickening. It is the smell of green things dying and it is a very unpleasent odor. Droughts are like watching a town at the bottom of a volcano be overrun by a very slow moving river of lava. You see it coming but there is not much you can do but let it creep in inch by inch. We water what we can but the rest is slowly being overtaken by drought. It will rain again eventually. The only question is when. Till then we'll keep watering and hoping.
